Detoxify your workplace and improve employee performance.

When Sick Building Syndrome (SBS) was coined by the World Health Organization back in 1984, many dismissed it as an exaggeration. How could a building make you sick? But it could and it did. No specific causes could be identified at the time, but many building occupants were experiencing acute health problems and daily discomfort. After closer examination, some illnesses could be linked to time spent in the building. Poor indoor air quality and lack of ventilation were listed as the culprits. The workplace was toxic, affecting employee performance. But workplace toxicity isn’t limited to physical conditions. There are also emotional and psychological conditions that can undermine your workforce's health and overall performance. What are the signs and how can they be addressed for the good of all?

More success stories from the employee engagement archives

It’s not difficult to make the case that the ongoing financial mess on Wall Street and TARP payments to some of the country’s biggest banks have victimized smaller firms. One victim is the investment management industry. A big challenge becomes being able to assure clients they can continue to trust them with their money.

As we have emphasized in previous blogs, having a workplace that engenders a culture of respect, engagement, trust, and fairness will aid in empowering your organization to keep clients. And how do you do that?

By inspiring your most valuable asset—your employees. When individual employees feel a part of the whole, they will invest more of their efforts on your customer’s behalf. And your customers will respond positively. Often a customer’s only perception of your business comes from their interaction with your employees. That presents a wonderful opportunity for you to become remembered as the deliverer of a great brand experience. The perception of being a caring organization will resonate well within the marketplace.

The employee factor is a powerful asset you already have that can offset market conditions. So ask yourself—what is your client’s perception of your company? Is their interaction with your organization conducive to them staying? Is your customer’s recollection of their entire experience with you, at all touch points, a good one? Is your organization still cautious about implementing an employee recognition and rewards program? Do these programs really work? Here are some success stories guaranteed to reassure you of the value of employee interaction.

How to motivate a sales champion

Industry Hall of Fame winner and AMD Founder Jerry Sanders launched an American Dream sales campaign as an incentive for his sales champions reaching 200 million in sales. When the goal was reached, the sales team was paid handsomely plus every other employee’s name was placed in a hat. Factory line worker Jocelyn Lleno was chosen and awarded a new home. Two others received Cadillac Sevilles.

CFOs Finding some security during times of uncertainty.

There is a lot we can learn by observing behavior and human nature. Depending on our level of apprehension or fear about the future, we decide what initiatives to cut and what to save. Having the responsibility of being your organization's financial captain, the pressure is on you to always have the right answers. I don't speak as one myself but as someone who has worked with CFO's in the hospital and manufacturing industries. I have observed, first hand, the knee jerk reaction by some CFOs to cut back when the economic news looks bleak. They instantly focus on streamlining rather than growth. No criticism on this. You must look realistically at your organization's state of financial affairs. Some CFO's have confided that when the economic landscape doesn't look so great, they consider a roll of the dice before choosing a path on an issue. During these uncertain times, its natural to be somewhat tentative about where and in whom to invest company resources. No doubt every organization has its unique challenges and workplace culture. The factors that go into a CFO's dollar allocation decisions are numerous. The good news is that more and more financial leaders are turning to their employees as a valuable resource. Investing in this valuable asset can boost value and profits. Lets take a look at today's economy and how investing in your workforce can offer big returns.

Discovering and capitalizing on employee engagement's golden key.

We've all heard the saying, "its simple but not necessarily easy." The "golden key" that instantly  engages and motivates your employees is very simple and even easy to implement.  Unfortunately, at the same time, changing the negative attitudes some managers have toward their employees is neither a simple nor easy task. For them, there's no point or worth in putting forth the effort to engage or motivate anyone. Their behavior is habitual. Successful employee engagment resides in looking at how your employees experience their workplace. Are employees experiencing advancement toward their work goals? Are they encouraged toward steady work improvement in an atmosphere that supports safety, dignity and purpose?  This is the golden key.
Can you answer the following questions in the affirmative?
Are you recognizing your employees' small wins? Does your workplace provide a safe haven to present new ideas and take risks? Do your employees feel that their dignity is being protected and their voices heard? Do you recognize and reward real progress?
Understanding how to use this golden key will reduce employee turnover and boost your overall employee performance. Here are some pointers.

Employers. Jump over your obstacles and increase performance!

My friend, John A, called me about all the new taxes affecting his music company. He was a bit anxious about his ability to continue operating in the black while retaining his talented employees. After some discussion he decided the best thing to do was to reach out to his accountant to get professional advice. John asked, What can I do to reduce my tax burden, I am already at the limit. His accountant's reply? "Well John you're doing everything right and by the book. Seems to me you're just going to have to make more money.", then hung up the phone.
Businesses today, across the country, face the very same problems. Regulation, not enough growth capital, health care costs, energy costs, more taxes, complexity of taxes, uncertainty about the economy's future. Sure, if you have the time, the money and the mentality to lobby legislators all day long for relief, more power to you. Frankly I haven't found one business owner, large or small, who enjoys such luxuries. Irrespective of the obstacles being imposed on you by regulation and economic uncertainties, facing these gremlins squarely will help you survive and excel. Here we look at the most pressing obstacles you face and ways to jump over them.

Safety Programs. How you can get a grip and keep it!

Some years ago I was contacted by a manufacturer who had visited our booth at an incentive trade show in Chicago. He was running a safety program which was not providing him with the results he expected. Although not our client, at the time, I welcomed his questions. Accidents at his facility were continuing and he was losing money. Talking with him opened my eyes wide to better understand why safety programs fail and what can be done about it.

CFOs: What Employee Reward Based Programs mean to you.

I recently attended a conference hosted by Proformative™, a CFO dedicated organization held in NYC. No, I am not a CFO myself and some have suggested I have friends in “interesting” places.

CFO’s are now taking a major role in controlling healthcare costs

Companies are beginning to address their employee’s health and wellness as a financial problem (or opportunity) rather than a Human Resources issue. As a result CFO’s are taking an active role in developing solutions.
